Nissan Has Unveiled New Skyline With ProPILOT 2.0 Smart Driver Assistance

Nissan revealed the new smart Skyline model alongside an infographic detailing how it will assist with hands-free highway driving.

Nissan revealed a new Nissan Skyline yesterday with an updated look and its new smart hands-free ProPILOT 2.0 drive assist technology.

The driver assistance system will allow drivers to drive hand-off on highways, as long as they are focused on the road — and sensors in the car will make sure the driver is, indeed, paying attention.

A world-first in hands-free driving

According to Nissan's press release, the new smart Skyline model will be "the world’s first driver assistance system to combine navigated highway driving with hands-off single-lane driving capabilities."

The model will go on sale in Japan this fall. According to the company, it will carry on the tradition started by the first Skyline in 1957 of adopting the most advanced technology of its time.

ProPILOT 2.0

As CNET reports, ProPILOT 2.0 is a big overhaul of the already robust ProPILOT driver-assist system.

The new system allows drivers to keep their hands off the wheel on highways.

If a slower car approaches, the car will suggest overtaking, at which point it will guide the driver to take the wheel and perform the maneuver.

While the driver has their hands off the wheel a monitoring system will continually confirm that their attention is on the road — in case they need to suddenly take control.

Nissan's press release includes an infographic with a step-by-step outline of the overtaking process, as well as the system's other capabilities.

Hybrid and petrol models

As well as the ProPILOT 2.0 driver-assist system, the premium sedan will also come with the new NissanConnect1 system, offering a wide range of connected services.

A hybrid version of the car is available. Petrol-powered versions of the car though will have newly fitted 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo VR30DDTT engines. The model’s new 400R grade makes it the most powerful factory-built Skyline ever.
