Russian Firm to Build 840-HP Tesla Model S-Based Mustang With Carbon Fiber Body

The new Tesla Model S-based, carbon fiber-body car might make zero to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds.

A Russian firm — called Aviar — declared its aim to build a carbon fiber-bodied coupe based on the Tesla Model S — called R67 — in the shape of the first-generation Ford Mustang, according to its website.

Options are limited for those who want an electric Ford Mustang. Ford Motor Company's forthcoming Mustang Mach-E is an option, but a Russian company called Aviar is building a vehicle to fill the void in luxury supercars of the sustainable persuasion.

Aviar founder Aleksey Rechev said the company's aim is "to catch the spirit of the legendary cars of the 1960s and rethink it in a modern way." The R67 clearly takes inspiration from the Mustang, but computer-generated renderings imply it's getting a lot of visual updates — like carbon fiber side skirts, a front splitter, a rear diffuser in place of a set of chromed exhaust tips, and flush-mounted door handles, reports Autoblog.

The forthcoming car will also have a spoiler that auto-extends at 75 mph (120.7 kph), and retracts downward when velocity drops to 50 mph (80.46 kph).

The interior features a portrait-centric touchscreen not unlike Tesla, with air vents sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The steering wheel is three-spoke, and the R67 model will only come as a two-seater.

Almost everything under the main body is scrapped form Tesla parts, like the two electric motors — one for each axle — on-board Wi-Fi connection, adaptive air suspension, traction control, six airbags, and even an Autopilot suite of semi-autonomous driving assistants.

Aviar has said the R67 makes zero to 62 mph (100 kph) in 2.2 seconds, and was self-rated at 840 horsepower. But the most baffling addition is perhaps an external sound system that, according to Aviar, "simulates the operation of a classic V8 engine."

Carbon fiber body, no pricetag

The carbon fiber will help lower the weight of the R67's colossal, 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, the whole package weighing-in at roughly 4,800 lbs (2,177 kg). That's 160 lbs (72.5 kg) lighter than Tesla's Model S P100D, and 1,400 lbs (635 kg) heavier than the 1967 Mustang fastback slung to a 302-cubic-inch V8, reports Autoblog.

Sadly, there's no word yet on the final price of Aviar's new R67. It's probably moving toward production, but it goes without saying this one won't be mass-produced. While it won't challenge auto-manufacturing superpowers, Aviar's aspirational reimagining of the golden age of concept cars could outshine Tesla's best.
