Extremely Rare Snowfall over Baghdad Captivates Residents

Many northern hemisphere countries are under a carpet of white snow, however, most regions of one such country are not typically on this winter wonderland list: Iraq.
So it comes as no surprise that when snow started to fall over Baghdad in Iraq on Tuesday, residents took to the streets to enjoy the historic moment.
In over one hundred years Baghdad has only experienced snow twice, this current time, and in 2008. The latter was more of a slushy flurry, whereas this year's snowfall is the real deal.
Ultra-rare experience
Very few Iraqi residents will have experienced the country's last proper snowfall, so this is quite a momentous, and joyful, a moment for the nation. Most have said it's the first time they've ever seen snow falling in the country's capital.
In 2008 there was a short-lived snowfall, but it quickly turned to slush — so most people didn't even have the time to see it, let alone experience it properly.
This time around, even though the ground isn't heavily covered, it's still a decent snowfall for a country that rarely sees snow.
Palm trees are coated in white powder, and roads are peppered with mystical white flakes. It's quite a scene to behold.
Many people out and about got out of their cars and onto the streets, snapping pictures or taking part in once-in-a-lifetime snowball fights.

The Bangkok Post stated that the Media head of the Iraqi Meteorological Centre told the AFP that "Snowfall may continue until Wednesday given the very cold weather. This cold wave is coming from Europe."
Snow is more typical in northern regions of Iraq, but its southern and central regions, where Baghdad is located, are rarely hit by such meteorological events.
