"Do you have a tattoo?" I ask John Swierk, assistant professor of Chemistry at Binghamton University, New York.
"When I was growing up, most of my friends didn't have tattoos, they weren't anywhere near as popular as they are today. So it's not something I thought a lot about," he tells me.
