Students Create A Building Block To Rival Lego | IKOS

Mina, Gates, & Paige, all classmates at Park City High School in Utah were participating in the PCCAPS program. Under the guidance of Mike Wong, a mentor at the program, the team was challenged to create something that is new, creative, and can be manufactured out of recycled material.

Utilizing 3D printing technology and SolidWorks, Mike, Mina, Gates, & Paige spent months crafting a shape based off principles set forth by Pete Roberts and Buckminster Fuller. Months of prototyping and revisions have allowed for creation of an interlocking building block unlike anything else out there.

Simply, IKOS are a modular, spherical construction toy for inventors of all ages. With one standard shape, users can create everything from a full sphere to abstract curved creations. When you want to enhance your creation, snap pieces together vertically to create anything you wish. You can design anything you can dream up by adding other items or painting the sphere to create a unique and customizable 3D puzzle.

IKOS are more than a building toy; they are a revolutionary way of thinking. They are named IKOS because of their geometry: icosahedrons on spheres. Made out of 100% recycled HDPE, IKO, LLC is turning milk jugs and other plastic containers into the toy of the 22nd century. The team believes there are other humanitarian applications for this design such as tornado shelters and water storage tanks. Based on the mathematical function of a sphere, IKOS wants to show people you can enclose more volume with less surface area.
