Tesla's new Model Y is the fourth vehicle of the company, and its fifth model ever. It hit the roads this month, and its heat pump has impressed even Elon Musk, CEO of the car-making company.
The model's heat pump could make the electric SUV much more efficient in cooler climates.
More and more details about the vehicle
As the Model Y hits the roads, more and more details about the new electric SUV are popping up out of the woodworks thanks to online videos and the owner's manual.
One such detail is the vehicle's heat pump. No other Tesla model currently has it, just the Model Y, and it's proving to be quite the engineering feat.
Model Y heat pump is some of the best engineering I’ve seen in a while. Team did next-level work.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 23, 2020
A heat pump transfers heat energy from a source of heat into a thermal reservoir, and it makes vehicles much more efficient in colder climates. This affects the range of any vehicle, but there's been more focus on SUVs.
In explaining the heat pump, Tesla's manual states "Model Y uses a heat pump to maximize efficiency; therefore, your air conditioning compressor and external fan may run and make noise even when the outside temperature is cold and your vehicle is heating or supercharging."
Elon Musk himself is in awe of the device as he clearly demonstrated through his tweet which stated "Model Y heat pump is some of the best engineering I’ve seen in a while. Team did next-level work."
As someone who sees and experiences many incredible engineering feats, this comment does not come lightly.
Musk even went into some short detail about the heat pump "PCB design techniques applied to create a heat exchanger that is physically impossible by normal means. Heat pump also has a local heating loop to spool up fast & extend usable temperature range. Octavalve is pretty special too. Team did great work. No credit to me."
