Tesla unveiled its new vehicle, the Tesla Roadster on Thursday. The sporty car reportedly capable of going from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds. If it can fulfill the claims, the Tesla will be the first such car ever to break the two-second mark. At the car's launch Tesla CEO, Elon Musk bragged that "This will be the first time that any production car has broken 9 seconds in the quarter mile.” As well as being quick, the new Tesla Roadster will have unprecedented stamina. It will have a range of 620 miles on a single charge. Musk explains the huge range saying: "The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars. Driving a gasoline sports car is going to feel like a steam engine with a side of quiche.”

Roadster will have a top speed over 250mph

The Roadster's top speed wasn’t revealed at the launch but Musk hinted it was "above 250 mph". The Roadster will feature three motors using a similar system to the Model S P100D. One motor will drive the front wheels and the other engines will drive a rear wheel each to make the car all-wheel drive.

This is a car for turning heads and not dropping your kids off at soccer practice. Described as a 2+2 the car can fit two adults comfortably up front and small people could get into the back at a pinch. The current fastest production car is the Agera RS from Sweden’s Koenigsegg which can hit a top speed of 277.9mph.

Musk unveiled the Roadster at the same time as the Tesla semi truck launch. The truck opened its trailer and the Roadster was driven out. The VIP launch event was attended by Tesla car owners and select members of the transport community. Those that fell in love with the Roadster were invited to put down a deposit on their car purchase of $50,000 which then gave them the privilege to take the prototype for a test drive. Putting down a deposit on a car that doesn’t even go into production for three years seems a bit of a gamble. But for Tesla fanatics, it is all worth it. Just don’t ask the customers who have laid down $1000 deposit for their Model 3s but are likely to have to wait another 12 months before they get their hands on their cars keycard.
