Audi Just Showcased E-Tron, Its First Electric Sports Car

Audi gave a live demo of its first-ever electric sportscar during a Tuesday presentation, as part of the CES 2021 event -- which Interesting Engineering attended.

Each year at CES, Audi showcases a wide range of exciting technologies ready for immediate release and conceptual ideas that tease what is to come. Audi's core vision always centers around the future of mobility and how the company's dedication to exciting and powerful emerging technologies will drive us there. The 2020 Consumer Electronic explored themes of autonomy, AI, and interconnectedness through smart technologies. 2021 built and expanded on those ideas.
During their 2021 presentation, Audi shared the digital stage with Formula E racer and clean energy advocate Lucas Di Grassi to help hammer home this Audi idea of “electrifying the future of premium mobility.”
Grassi got behind the new electric vehicle, the Audi RS E-Tron GT prototype. The Formula E racer praised the vehicle’s impressive acceleration and handling abilities as he put the prototype through its paces during the Demo.
The RS e-Tron boasts some impressive numbers
The Audi electric vehicle uses a 94kWh battery as standard, a two-speed gearbox, a rear locking differential, and one electric motor on either axle. This helps produce 591 bhp and an impressive 850Nm of torque. Audi is currently targeting a WLTP range of 250 miles (402 kilometers) off of one charge.
Its 0-60 mph (96km/h) time will fall under 3.5 seconds and the EV will have a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). As Audi engineers push to bring this vehicle to market in the very near future, the team expects to improve the car's range and overall current performance.
It will be interesting to see how Audi's sustainable initiative and commitment to EV tech will manifest itself in its premium vehicles. Audi has made it clear that it wants to compete with EV powerhouses like Tesla.
The Audi RS E-Tron GT prototype is a big step in the right direction, with the Audi presentation team going as far as to say that today's vehicle is one of the most important cars in the company's history.
