British Shop Creates the World's First Ever All-Electric Classic Mercedes Benz SL

Converting classic cars into electric versions of themselves has been a growing business or hobby of late. It may make some people balk at the idea that such iconic vehicles could be transformed, however, some of these transformations are truly exceptional. 

One such exceptional transformation was made by the SL Shop in the UK that took a classic Mercedes Benz SL R107 from the 1970s and 80s and turned it into an all-electric version of itself. 

No matter which side of the fence you may sit on with regards to restoring classic cars, this one will have you whooping with excitement.

The world's first electric classic Mercedes Benz SL R107

That's right, this is the world's one and only classic Mercedes Benz SL R107 that's all-electric. The SL Shop, based in Stratford Upon Avon in England, which specializes in restoring these models of Mercedes Benz, chose to take a different tack and instead of merely restoring one of these models they chose instead to turn it into an electric vehicle. 

So, out went the 3.5 liter V8 engine from beneath the front bonnet, which could bring the car from zero to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 9.9 seconds, and in its stead went in two electric motors that were placed under the bonnet. These, in fact, make the vehicle faster than its original model. 

Moreover, to create an almost 50/50 ideal weight distribution the shop added an additional 100 kg weight (220 pounds) to the restored electric version of the SL R107. The car now also has a real-world range of 240 km (150 miles), giving it plenty of space to roam in a classic environmentally friendly manner.

Originally, the SL R107 was distributed between 1971 and 1989 and was the second longest-running single-series the carmaker manufactured, after its G-Class off-roader.
