Cadillac Releases a Teaser of Its First Full Electric Vehicle

Cadillac is ready to embrace a fully electric future.

American carmaker, Cadillac, is showing off its green muscle by releasing teaser images of its first ever electric vehicle.

Cadillac is a division of General Motors which announced last week its intent to move towards an all-electric future. So far there is scant detail about what the car will be called or powered by. 

The company promises to release more information near the car's release date. Current images of the EV situate it as a luxury Model X competitor.

General Motors says it is ready for an all-electric future

The launch of the EV is part of an aggressive product release movement by GM who plans to release a new model every 6 months between now and 2021.


“Cadillac’s EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world,” said Steve Carlisle, president of Cadillac. 

“It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility.” GM is developing an EV platform and says Cadillac will be the first brand to come onboard. 

The platform allows the carmaker to respond to changing market demand and have responded with relatively short design and development lead time.

GM says it is developing battery cells and drive units that can be used across different GM vehicle lineups across the globe. 

The output of battery systems will be adjusted according to vehicle and market demand. 

Cadillac president Steve Carlisle said: "The architectural design will allow the battery packs to fit into the vehicle like ice cubes in an ice cube tray, you can put in as much water as you want to make as many cubes as you need -- the tray still takes up the same space in the freezer." 

Big name brands all heading towards electric

Cadillac is the latest of big name car makers to show their support for an all-electric future. One of the last brands to go electric is the Toyota-owned Lexus, who doesn't have an EV in their lineup, though they do have a successful range of hybrids. 

Last year, the luxury carmaker denied it was behind the times, instead, it was saying it wasn’t time for electric vehicles, and their delay in turning to all-electric models shows they are working towards better powertrain designs. While Tesla may have the crown for most well-known EV maker, there are lots of brands creeping in to take a share of the market. 

One interesting space to watch is the low cost or entry-level electric vehicles. Tesla's Model 3 is the cheapest in its lineup and has proven to be popular across the globe, but Volkswagon is planning to launch an EV at half the price that could shake the boat.

Volkswagen also says the low-cost EV, dubbed the MEB won’t have production problems like Tesla did so can guarantee the car is delivered into customers hands quickly. Whether the MEB has the range and detailing the Model 3 remains to be seen.
