GM Uses 334,544 Lego Bricks to Build a Full-Size Chevrolet Silverado

In a cross-promotional effort, GM and LEGO teamed up to produce a full-sized replica of the Chevrolet Silverado made out of LEGO bricks—the LEGO Silverado. The model is based on the 2019 Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss and is the first full-sized Chevrolet car or truck built exclusively out of the iconic building blocks.

Reuniting to Promote the New LEGO Movie

The LEGO Silverado is the follow-up to GM and LEGO’s successful partnership from 2017 when GM built a LEGO Batmobile for The LEGO Batman Movie. The truck will be featured in the upcoming animated movie, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, when it is released on February 8th.

Remarkable Feat of LEGO Construction

In case you were not aware, there is such a thing as a specially trained LEGO Master Builders whose job it is to take on the most challenging designs and builds for LEGO models—and GM used 18 of them to construct the LEGO Silverado.

It took these builders over 2,000 hours to hand-select and place each individual piece—334,544 in all—of the bright red pickup truck; incidentally, the most common brick used in the model is red 2X8 stud brick, a mainstay of LEGO kits everywhere.

The truck model also features working lights and unique graphical detailing exclusive to the LEGO model.

Weighing in at 3,307 pounds, the LEGO Silverado was designed by LEGO Master Builders in the LEGO Group’s Model Shop, located in Enfield, Connecticut—where the truck was also assembled.

In a move that underscores some of the values at the heart of the two companies, Chevrolet brought students from the Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School’s A World in Motion Program and the Oxford Community School’s FIRST LEGO League to the North American International Auto Show to unveil the LEGO Silverado just prior to the show’s opening.

For Chevrolet, supporting local education has long been a major concern. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, GM has roots in the city going back to the company’s founding in 1911, so partnering with LEGO is a natural fit.

For the LEGO Group, founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk in Denmark and still run as a privately-held, family-owned company, one of the guiding principles of the company is to inspire children through creative play and building.

No doubt hoping to impress the next generation of engineers and builders, the LEGO Silverado is much more than a tie-in for a pickup truck or the LEGO Movie 2, it’s an impressive achievement in design and engineering that can inspire the young and old alike.
