Unlike many major automobile manufacturers who are developing autonomous technology for the future, Mercedes-Benz is releasing a semi-autonomous vehicle this month. For a while now, Tesla has been on top of the autopilot and the computer assisted driving industry, but Mercedes might soon topple their dominance. The all new E-Class set to be released this month starts at US$54,650 and is equipped with some autonomous features even Tesla doesn't have. Of course, Mercedes-Benz is calling the new 2017 E-Class the most intelligent car in the world, but what can it really do?

Featuring 360˚ radar and cameras compiling almost every viewing angle, the car as being pushed as a stepping stone to an accident-free world. While the new E-Class has features that allow near autonomous operation on the highway, like following a car at a certain distance and automatic passing abilities, its real prowess shines through in accident avoidance, according to Mercedes-Benz. If the sensors in the car sense that an accident is imminent, it can adjust your seat quickly to position you for the crash, take driving control to avoid the accident if possible, and even emit a tone that keeps you from having hearing loss in the collision.

The car is also equipped with what Mercedes calls Car-to-X Communication, according to The Drive. This technology connects every E-Class together utilizing the sensors of other cars to make decisions on its own. Once implemented in a wide array of models, this would allow for each car to have a flawless roadmap of everything happening around it, even miles in advance. Imagine a car that can sense traffic ahead, before visual cues, and divert your route accordingly.

The interior and exterior of the new E-Class, of course, feature Mercedes' traditional luxury elegance, with all of the technology integrated. Tesla will likely still remain on top of the autonomous game in terms of populace, but this new car marks the beginning of some major competition for Musk and his engineers.
