When you think of electric vehicles, the first brand that comes to mind is probably Tesla. Indeed, for a long time, Tesla seemed to have the best electric vehicles around complimented by an impressive Supercharger network.

An illegitimate race

It was a Tesla Model 3 that had won the last Cannonball Run, an illegitimate speedy road trip/race that sees drivers try to get from New York to Los Angeles in as little time as possible. The run, first reported by The Drive, is kind of outdated and in bad taste as it was conceived to protest speed limits that are essential for road safety.

But it does prove a useful way to measure the performance of electric vehicles. At first, it seemed impossible to dethrone the Tesla Model 3 as the vehicle had a country-wide efficient Supercharger network and a longer range between charges.

However, on December 31, 2020, a Porsche Taycan 4S beat the previous Cannonball Run record held by the Tesla by 51 minutes. This is not so surprising if you think about how fast a Porsche is but one is left wondering what charging network the Porsche's drivers took advantage of.

Electrify America

The answer is Electrify America’s network which Porsche claims can add up to 62 miles (100 km) of range in just five minutes by delivering up to 350 kW to the car. If you doubt this really happened you can check out the video embedded below from Out of Spec Motoring.

It should be noted that the ride saw three people stay in the car to take turns driving and that the car was equipped with the smallest and lightest possible wheels to increase its speed.

A full road trip report is expected to be available soon and we know we will be waiting for it. After all, what's more exciting than seeing an electric vehicle tackling the extreme challenge of crossing an entire country in just a matter of two days?
