Tesla's most inexpensive Model Y version will be canceled, as per CEO Elon Musk. That said, the new plan is for another affordable version to take its place in the coming few months.

This isn't the first time the EV maker changes the vehicle configuration of its lineups, so it shouldn't come as too huge a surprise.

The Model Y was launched in March 2019 with four different versions of the SUV.

Switching things up

The reason Tesla is canceling its cheapest Model Y version is because its range would be too low.

Tesla's different configuration terms have changed as the years went by. Initially, the company used regular kWh capacity of its battery pack to identify between its different versions. Nowadays it uses terms such as "Standard Range", "Standard Range Plus", "Long Range", among others.

Tesla's Model Y was launched with four different versions: "Standard Range", "Long Range", "Dual Motor AWD", and "Performance". The last two were fitted out with a Long Range battery.

The Model Y was launched based on Model 3 configurations. As these have changed, for instance from "Standard Range" (which is no longer listed on Tesla's website), to "Standard Range Plus", which costs roughly $3,000 more than the original version.

When the Model Y was lauched, Tesla stated that it would be selling its different versions at $5,000 more than the Model 3 ones.

Everyone has been waiting with bated breath for the Model Y's "Standard Range Plus" to go on sale, however, Elon Musk took to Twitter to explain that Tesla will not be selling that version. Instead, the Model Y version we can expect will be a "Long Range RWD", which will be the model's most affordable version.

It appears that its rollout will happen in the coming months and the price will start at $45,000. Moreover, Musk stated that it would have a higher mile range.
