Tesla Launches Its First-Ever Portable Charging Station for $500

But if you are after very fast home charging, you are still better off with the hard-wired option which still provides the fastest option.

It seems Tesla is trying to deal with one of the problems that have been identified as a setback for potential EV owners - the ability to access charging stations in rented properties. 

The new plug-in could prove really popular in Europe where apartment living is more common and access to parking is more limited. The new charger is available in the U.S for $500. 

The ability to quickly charge without hassle is the focus of many EV leaders. Tesla has led the industry with its supercharging stations aggressively rolling out Tesla exclusive charging infrastructure across the globe. That trend will continue as Tesla moves to expand in Europe. 

On Boxing Day last year, Tesla CEO tweeted that the supercharger network would be extended across the European continent. 

“Yes. Supercharger coverage will extend to 100% of Europe next year. From Ireland to Kiev, from Norway to Turkey,” Musk stated. In addition to adding superchargers on highways and along peak commutes, Tesla has said they intend to work hard to get supercharger systems into urban areas. 

Europe to get massive rollout of supercharger stations

This is particularly important for city-dwellers who have limited access to parking space. Marty Meany tweeted at Musk asking: “Hey @elonmusk - any recommendations for people living in rented accommodation with parking spaces separate to building? Charging solution for us would help massively!”

Musk promptly responded saying: “We are dramatically increasing Tesla Superchargers within cities & working with landlords to add home charging to apartment buildings” 

Electric car infrastructure could be a tipping point for consumers choice it the future. Fast and affordable charging could be the deciding factor for many potential EV owners as the market tightens and EV sales increase. 

Musk has stated many times that the overall cost of running an electric vehicle is much lower than a traditional combustion engine vehicle. 

Without the added costs of regular maintenance, oil changes etc, Musk suggests you are likely to save around 1000 USD a year when driving an electric car. But these figures will only remain true if the cost of power and access to charging remains low. 

Tesla owners are likely to be safest for longest in this regards as Musk has made it clear he never intends to make charging an income stream for the company.
