Volvo Cars introduced, on Wednesday, the XC40 Recharge, the company’s very first fully-electric car.

It won't be the last, however, as the new model is part of its new Recharge line concept. The new concept is aimed at dramatically cutting the company's carbon emissions.

Going all-in on electric

Over the next five years, Volvo has planned to launch a fully electric car every year. The company is on a mission to have fully-electric vehicles make up 50 percent of its global sales by 2025.

“We have said this several times before: for Volvo Cars, the future is electric,” Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo chief executive said in a press release.

“Today, we take a major new step in that direction with the launch of our fully electric XC40 and the Recharge car line.”

The car manufacturer says, "the XC40 Recharge is everything customers expect from a Volvo."

The new electric car boasts a fully electric all-wheel-drive powertrain that allows for a range of over 400 km (WLTP) on a single charge and an output of 408hp.

The company also says the car's battery charges to 80 percent of its capacity in 40 minutes, using a fast charger.

The XC40 Recharge is also the first Volvo car to have a new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system.

The system can be used with Volvo On Call, the car company's digital connected services platform. This system allows plug-in hybrid drivers to track how much time they are spending driving on electric energy.

The new car was launched alongside Volvo's ambitious plan to reduce its lifecycle carbon footprint per car by 40 percent between 2018 and 2025.

Ultimately, Volvo is aiming to become a climate-neutral company by 2040.
