Winter is coming. As the temperature begins to drop outside, you may begin to think or even fantasize about what you will be doing during next year's summer months. However, there may be a way for you to escape the frigid temperatures (and any potential white walkers); get a caravan.

Now caravans, also known as a recreational vehicle (RV) or campers, traditionally have the cultural stigma of being, something run down and boring eventually devolving to your extra storage space in the garage. However, that perspective is outdated.

Caravans have existed for those who want to have some of the small amenities of home as they ventured out into the wilderness looking for adventure, making it a staple of settlements in the West during the turn of the 20th century.

Now in the 21st century, some caravans can rival even some of the chicest apartments across the globe, giving you the freedom to travel where you like without missing a beat.

It may be cold where you are now, so maybe it is time for you to get a caravan and head south, to the nearest coast, for the winter.

Here are some of the coolest caravans to take on your next mobile adventure.

Mehrzeller

This igloo inspired caravan is one of the more unique looking campers on its list. Like out of something in a sci-fi film or for camping on another planet, the Mehrzeller is a highly customizable multicellular caravan.

Created by the architecture company NONSTANDARD, the clean, geometric, and angular exterior can be created to fit any individual`s needs, whether you need a small kitchen or living room. The price varies on what design you pick.

Sealander

As implied in its name, the Sealander is for adventures on the read and on the sea. Though it may not have as many features and amenities as the other entries on this list, the Sealander's versatility makes it a unique contender.

The German-designed camper only weighs 380kg. It is a traditional caravan on the road, however, when it is lowered into the water, it turns into a motorboat. The transforming caravan includes a sink, a cool box, removable roof, camping toilet, and two berths for sleeping.

Tiny House Valhalla/Baluchon

Created by the talented Laëtitia Dupé and Vincent Bouhours of Baluchon, the Tiny House Valhalla embodies the phrase, “big things come in small packages”. Able to host a family of three, the camper home has two lofted spaces one for a living lounge, and another for the parent’s bedroom.

Including features that anyone in an NYC apartment would be happy with, the rustic interior is a balance between a home and a remote workspace. The Baluchon team has completed 14 bespoke projects like this.  

The Mercedes Moving Home

From an old Mercedes truck, custom van renovator Jack Richens, of Oxford, United Kingdom, has created the perfect cozy camper.

The van is a mobile home with a kitchenette, a small sleeping berth, and a storage space as well as additional heating and insulation.  The entire process cost Richens around $27,064

i-hut

The Scandinavian inspired i-hut may rival some of your parent's houses. The home away from home is more down to earth than some of the previous entries but offers 3 times more in amenities. The i-hut can be adjusted for both static living (non-road legal) and for those ready to have the ultimate caravan (road legal).

As described by the team, “The i-hut is new and unique. A creative and original answer to aspirational second home ownership. The best thing for grown-up glamping! The i-hut is “mobile” and can be transported to alternative locations.”

Those using the i-hut can live comfortably as the interior can host a double bedroom, a shower, a kitchen, a dining area, and a living room. Not to mention an additional area that can be used for children.

Bus Home

Travel enthusiasts Meag and Ben Poirier took an old bus from craigslist for $8,000 and transformed it into a fantastic home on wheels.

From the exterior, you may not get much from the blue exterior, but the interior hosts a comfortable amount of amenities. All built by the couple the camper home, has a full bed, a living space, a furnace, and even a freshwater system.

Tiny Heirloom

Quite literally a home on wheels, the Tiny Heirloom caravans take traveling to the next level. These campers host some of the best amenities you can find on this list.

With their mantra, “downsize, don’t downgrade”, these American-style homes host a series of luxurious amenities, like a fully functional bathroom, kitchen with a fridge and even a dining room, just to name a few.   

The Tiny Heirloom home mixes various design styles to bring customers’ dream camper to fruition. As described by the team, “we partner with each client and together we start with a blank page to create a tiny house that is as unique as they are.”
