Did you know that the first computer prototype was invented back in the 19th century by Charles Babbage? Today classical computers are an integral part of modern life. They could however be in for a complete overhaul.

Quantum computers have started surfacing everywhere and they could make it possible to compute orders of magnitude faster than their classical counterparts. This is because they can consider large numbers of possible situations simultaneously. 

These computers represent the evolution of classical, or binary computing, upon which the foundations of the modern world are built. So what are the differences between classical and quantum computers?

In classical computing, data is encoded in binary bits whereas, in quantum computing, data is encoded in quantum bits, or qubits. This means that data isn’t just encoded in either ones or zeroes, but also both at the same time.

How does this empower quantum computers to be so much more powerful than classical ones? Where are we at in the evolution of quantum computers and how quickly might we start using them?
