Flammable Methane Trapped Beneath Icy Lakes

Interesting Engineering

Ice lake methane originates when the organic matter naturally existing at the bottom of the lake and the organic waste from the lake's surroundings decompose in water.

The flammable natural gas forms bubbles below the surface of the lake which gets trapped under the layer of ice during winter. When the ice eventually thaws, the gas escapes through the cracks.
