Guy Builds Integrated Circuit in His Garage, Gives It Reactive-Ion Etching Upgrade

Global chip shortage? Just build one in your garage.

An integrated circuit, commonly known as IC or just chip, is an entire electronic circuit made up of many separate components such as transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors, and the conductive pathways that connect them all, all manufactured from a single piece of silicon crystal.

Admittedly, building one at home is not a task that can be done easily; nevertheless, you can leave it to YouTube to have someone who can build a homemade integrated circuit and take it a step further by trying to overcome the limitations of the photolithography process that was used to create the chip.

As you'd imagine, the process is as complex as it gets, but in this video by Sam Zeloof, you can find detailed information, as well as entertainment. Overall, the video is so expertly done that it makes you wonder how long it will be until someone 'amateur' is able to produce a working fully functional CPU of some sort. When you think about the ongoing chip shortage which has forced phone, car, TV, and game console manufacturers to scale back production, Sam's home-lab is definitely on its way for something greater.
