Here's How 90 Years of Ingenious Engineering Made Tires Quieter and More Efficient

Redesign the wheel, and make it better.

"Don't reinvent the wheel," as the old adage goes, and it does have a point. Unless, of course, you intend to learn more about wheels.

The basic tire that we are all familiar with is a relatively recent invention that involves a huge amount of careful engineering, and it has been "reinvented" and transformed many times over the last 70 years. Since they are there to simply make the cars roll, you'd think they'd be rather simple and boring. Still, they can be incredibly interesting since there are even advanced futuristic tires that are nearly indestructible. For example, in this video by YouTuber Andrew Lam, you can see how scientists figured out how ingenious adjustments to tread shape made tires significantly quieter.

However, the wheel has long been a symbol of human technical progress, so understanding the history of tires requires knowledge of the evolution of the wheel itself. If you want to learn more about their fascinating history, cool tire designs, and the engineering behind them, make sure you watch the video embedded above, and as always, enjoy.
