Make Your Own Automated Rubber Chicken Pusher with This Guide

Are you on the market for a heavily over-engineered solution to a non-problem? Fed up of manually squeezing rubber chickens to make them squeak?
Then this little project is right up your alley. Follow this guide to find out how to make one.

As you can imagine, you'll need some tools and materials before you get started.
Materials and gear needed
- Timber
- Rubber chickens
- Plastic tubing
- Liquid rubber
- Metal rods
- Liquid epoxy
- Magnets
- DC motor
- Tubular steel
- Ball bearings
- Various 3D printed parts
- Hot glue gun
- Basic tools (wrench, screwdrivers, etc)
- Various nuts and bolts
- Mini lathe
With all your gear in hand, let's get on with the build.
Step 1: Make a cast of your finger
The first step is to take your length of clear uPVC pipe. Cut a short length of it long enough to cover your index finger.
Glue the length to a small square of wood using hot glue. With that done, mix up your liquid mold rubber and pour it into the plastic pipe.
With that done, place your right index finger into the mixture to make a cast of your finger. Leave your finger in the mixture until the set.

Once set, remove your finger from the cast. Next, take your metal rod and cut a short length using an angle grinder. Bore a hole through the rod using your lathe.
Next, suspend the rod within the finger cast as shown in the video. Ensure the rod extends to near the end of the finger cast to ensure it is rigid enough to actually poke the chicken once set.
With that done, mix up your other liquid rubber, and pour it into the cast around the rod to make a cast of your finger.
Step 2: Make the chicken holder
Next, take some more pieces of timber and one of your rubber chickens. Mark out the rough shape of the back of the chicken onto the wood to make small wedge support for the chicken.
Cut and sand the wooden piece as needed. With that done, pull the head of one of your rubber chickens and glue a small magnet to the inside back of the chicken. Glue another magnet or a piece of metal to the wooden wedge to act as a mounting point for the chicken.

With that done, remove your finger cast from the mold. You will likely need to cut away parts of the mold the free the finger.
Step 3: Make the finger pusher mechanism
Next, 3D print the various parts needed for the pusher mechanism. No models are provided, but you can attempt to make your own through trial and error.
Once ready, assemble the finger pusher mechanism using the 3D parts, ball bearings, and rubber finger.

Next, take a length of steel sheet and cut it into a strip. Mark out the position of the motor mounting points, and drill matching holes in the sheet.
Mount the DC motor as needed. With that done, mount the finger pushing mechanism to the motor assembly as shown in the video.

Step 4: Make the frame and finish the piece
With that done, the next step is to design the frame for the pusher and chicken in your CAD software of choice. Once done, 3D print all the parts needed, and assemble as required.
Cut and drill some lengths of tubular steel to build the frame and connect to the 3D parts as shown. Mount the finger pushing mechanism and chicken mounting piece to the frame as needed too.
Once partially constructed, test the action of the finger, and adjust the frame as required.

With that done, your DIY rubber chicken pushing device is now complete. Now all you need to do is figure out what to actually do with it.
Options include converting it into some form of an alarm clock, a remote-activated pranking gadget, or purely as a desk curiosity. The options are limitless.
