Numberphile Illustrates an Almost Magical Mathematical Card Trick
We all love Numberphile's mathematical clips. The YouTuber loves numbers, and we agree.
In this clip, he has a guest star bring us an almost magical mathematical card trick. Magic and math combined! We could not be more excited.
The trick starts out by shuffling a bunch of cards, some of which are face down and others heads up. You then pick a number between 5 and 10 and lay out the number of those cards in a row with them touching each other.
The objective of the game is to wipe the table of all the cards, but you can only draw the card if it's head up. If the card is touching neighbor cards you flip them over.
As such it's crucial to pick the right card first to remove, because picking the wrong one may lead to a dead end when you lose.
The guest star is so good at this trick she can tell just by looking at the cards which game is winnable and which is a dead end. And better yet she teaches you how you can tell, too. But you have to watch the video for that lesson.
The game is fun to watch and easy to replicate. All you need is a deck of cards and a table.
