This Video Explains What Happens Inside Your Car’s Differential

Gale Banks of Banks Power breaks down everything you need to know about your car’s differential.

Do you know how the differential in your car works? Do you know the function of a car differential?  If you are lost but are a little curious Gale Banks of Banks Power has got a video for you. The car enthusiast has created a video that demonstrates how a differential operates using a plastic over and clever engineering.

So what is an automotive differential? A differential is designed to drive a pair of wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds. For example in vehicles without a differential, such as karts, both driving wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed, usually on a common axle driven by a simple chain-drive mechanism.

In the informative video Banks examines if the use of aftermarket differential covers could actually enhance the performance of your vehicle over time. To demonstrate the power of the differential, Banks places a plastic see-through cover on the rear differential of an F-150 to provide a first-hand view of the gears in action.

As seen in the video, Banks breaks down that in order for a differential to properly lubricate itself properly, it needs an evenly rounded cover that's close to the ring gear to distribute fluid and get every part coated. For more on the topic, be sure to check out the video above.
