This Training Film Made in 1953 Explains Fluid Coupling Brilliantly

When stationary, a combustion engine must be disconnected from the drive wheels to keep the engine running. The engine must then be connected to the drive shaft gradually, which is done by fluid coupling.

The fluid coupling transmits rotating mechanical power to the wheels.
