Watch The Differential Pressure Flow Measuring Principle Come To Life

The concept is surprisingly easy to wrap your head around.
Interesting Engineering

Fluid mechanics can be hard to wrap your mind around, especially if you are just getting started as an engineer. In this case, the differential pressure flow measuring principle is one of those concepts you are sure to come across, especially if you are an engineer. Flowmeter technology heavily relies on this principle. Differential pressure flowmeters use Bernoulli's equation to measure the flow of fluid in a pipe. These meters control flow, introducing the pipe's right constriction that creates a pressure drop across the flowmeter.

The idea is relatively simple. Anytime the flow increases, more pressure drop is made. Interestingly, this type of technology accounts for about 21% of the world market for flowmeters. For the uninitiated, the Bernoulli Equation can be considered to be a statement of the conservation of energy principle appropriate for flowing fluids. The illustration in the video intuitively sheds light on the differential flow measuring principle.

As for fluid mechanics, this area of physics helps understand the behavior of fluid under various forces and at different atmospheric conditions, and to select the proper fluid for various applications.
