Watch This Model Crankshaft Move at a Mind-Boggling 1000 rpm

This model crankshaft is moving impressive fast during this metal turning demo.

Machining is always a bit hypnotizing to watch. Learning about the individual parts used during the machining process can be just as hypnotizing. Machine turning is no different. For the uninitiated, turning is a form of machining, which is used to create rotational parts by cutting away unwanted material. While turning, you might come across a crankshaft like this. In the demo, the Youtuber highlights how the crankshaft is able to go from 0-1000rpm in just under 30 seconds. Not bad.

Turning usually requires a turning machine or lathe, workpiece, fixture, and cutting tool. The workpiece is a piece of pre-shaped material that is secured to the fixture. This fixture itself is attached to the turning machine and allowed to rotate at high speeds. This is why you might need a crankshaft able to rotate at 1000rpm.

This form of machining is usually used as a secondary process to add and refine features on parts that may have been manufactured uses a separate process. The process overall is ideas ideal for creating manufactured pieces with precise rotational features. Pretty cool, right?
