Bankura’s Sarenga was home to a terrible accident on Wednesday afternoon when an overhead tank with a capacity of storing 700 cubic meters of water came crashing down.
Video shows concrete pieces coming down the tank’s walls and shaking uncontrollably. The tank which is located in Fatedanga under the Sarenga police station gave way at around 3 p.m. Locals had gathered around at a safe distance to capture the disaster on their phones.
According to the sources, there were no injuries, but the collapse of the tank is expected to result in water scarcity at 20 villages. This poses a massive threat since these villages are the driest areas of the zone.
It is plausible to think that this is the result of faulty design and construction quality compromised. The water tank was constructed only two years back. These sorts of structural engineering failures happen frequently in India because of poor building standards and widespread corruption.
The government will bring water to the affected villages and start an inquiry of the accident.
