The customized Chiron model reached an incredible top speed of 304.773 mph.

Bugatti has set a world record with its pre-production version of the Bugatti Chiron. It is the first hyper sports car to break the 300-miles-per-hour barrier (482.80 km/h).

The Bugatti sports car reached a top speed of 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h).

An 'inconceivable' record

It seems Bugatti are tired of winning so often. In a press release, Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti, says "we have shown several times that we build the fastest cars in the world. In the future, we will focus on other areas."

The goal, Winkelmann says, "was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300-mile-per-hour mark." Bugatti reached that milestone in spectacular fashion, as can be seen in the video below.

The news was first broken by Top Gear on Monday. Bugatti test driver, Andy Wallace, broke the record at the Volkswagen Group's Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.

“An incredible speed. It’s inconceivable that a car would be capable of this. But the Chiron was well prepared, and I felt very safe - even in these high speed ranges,” Andy Wallace said.

Specially made Chiron

Bugatti's Chiron derivative was specially created to break the speed record. As CNET reports, a Dallara-supplied body was specially optimized for aerodynamics - it is roughly 10 inches longer than a standard Chiron.

A new rear aero piece was fitted onto the car's tail, and the car also sits closer to the ground.

The record-breaking Chiron model houses the same 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 engine found in the regular model, though it has the 1,600-horsepower tune of another model, Bugatti's one-off Centodieci.

For the run, Michelin created special Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires capable of rotating up to 4,100 times per minute. The tires were X-rayed before being fitted to the Chiron model to search out any imperfections and ensure safety.

The speed record was verified by TÜV – Germany’s Technical Inspection Association.
