A Tesla owner shared a video of his car swerving to avoid crashing into a pig, which had run into the middle of the road, whilst on Autopilot.
The driver, who presented his video as a response to people on social media claiming Tesla Autopilot will never be safe, even got a response from Elon Musk.
A Tesla Autopilot success story
In recent years, video and photos of Tesla vehicles that had crashed while on Autopilot have gone viral on social media and been reported by the media worldwide.
While collision avoidance doesn't make quite as much of a scoop, in the majority of incidents Autopilot helps to avoid accidents.
Tesla owner Pranay Pathole shared a video on Twitter of an instance of collision avoidance in which his Tesla, on Autopilot, avoid what may have been a wild pig in the middle of the road.
While the footage looks like it was filmed on a potato from the same farm the pig might have come from, it's nevertheless an impressive showing of Tesla Autopilot's capabilities.
Musk describes Autopilot as "superhuman"
Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on Pathole’s video and mentioned upcoming software upgrades for Tesla Autopilot:
Autopilot prime directive is: don’t crash. What seems fast to humans is slow to a computer. 360 degree low light vision & sonar, plus forward radar enable to be superhuman. Upcoming software upgrades will increasingly show the potential.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 8, 2020
Amongst the highly publicized Autopilot incidents, one driver claimed that "Autopilot saved his life" with an evasive maneuver on the highway, Elektrek reported at the time. Only last week a video emerged of a Tesla Model 3 that had slammed into a truck while on Autopilot.
