McDonald's classics will be adding a vegetarian option to their midst. The McPlant, the global fast-food chain's upcoming plant-based burger, will be made available in certain markets as early as next year.
The McPlant will be "crafted exclusively for McDonald's, by McDonald's," reads the company's statement, published on Monday.
Fake meat patties and alternatives are popping up around the world, and McDonald's won't stand by idly as others stake their claims.
"In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken-substitutes, and breakfast sandwiches," Ian Borden, McDonald's international president, said at an investor meeting on Monday, per USA Today.
The McPlant will offer the typical McDonald's crave-able flavors, and the company statement said, "There are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich. It’s made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings."
It sounds just like other McDonald's meals—just on the healthier side, we hope.
This isn't good news for everyone, however.
Beyond Meat, an American plant-based meat producer had started testing its vegetarian patty in select McDonald's outlets in Canada last year. But the news that McDonald's would be creating its own plant-based patties in-house has led to shares for Beyond Meat to already started dropping, per Futurism.
In any case, many markets will start noticing McDonald's new McPlant in a few months, as the company mentioned, "Markets can adopt the McPlant when they’re ready and we expect some to test the burger next year."
